Socceroos midfielder Connor Metcalfe has grown weary of the criticism coming from the United States ahead of the World Cup. Since Australia was drawn into Group D alongside the co-hosts in December, American pundits have consistently targeted the Socceroos.
US Pundits' Barbs
Former striker Landon Donovan labeled Socceroos coach Tony Popovic as 'smug' and predicted Australia would finish last in the group behind the USA, Turkey, and Paraguay. 'Thanks for coming, Aussies and your smug coach - you can get back on the Qantas airplane and head back home, pal,' Donovan quipped.
CBS pundit Mike Grella described the Australia fixture as a 'lay-up' for the American side. This week, former USA international Alexi Lalas added fuel to the fire by calling the Socceroos an 'average team' after their 1-0 loss to Mexico.
Popovic's Response
While Popovic has laughed off the jibes, his players have taken note. Metcalfe, speaking on the eve of a friendly against Switzerland, expressed his frustration. 'I mean, I've seen all the US stuff, and I'm just sick of it, to be honest — I just am,' he said. 'Like all this talk — it's just — let's just wait for the game, whatever happens, happens. It's just so much rubbish and I'm just sick of it.'
Metcalfe expects a tense and feisty match, similar to the October friendly in Colorado, where the USA defeated Australia 2-1. That game was physical, with USA defender Chris Richards squaring up to Socceroo Jason Geria after captain Christian Pulisic was injured.
Looking Ahead
Australia faces Switzerland in a friendly before their World Cup opener against Turkey. The highly anticipated clash against the USA is set for June 19 (June 20 AEST).
