Liverpool Appoint Andoni Iraola as New Head Coach on Two-Year Deal
Liverpool Appoint Andoni Iraola as New Head Coach

Liverpool have officially appointed Andoni Iraola as their new head coach, with the 43-year-old Spaniard signing a two-year contract at Anfield. The announcement comes just six days after the dismissal of Arne Slot, following a disappointing title defence that prompted a thorough review by the club's hierarchy.

Swift Appointment After Slot's Sacking

The Reds moved quickly to secure Iraola, identifying him as the ideal candidate to implement a more aggressive and attacking style of play. Despite interest from AC Milan, Bayer Leverkusen, and Crystal Palace, Liverpool's pursuit was decisive. Other candidates, such as Stuttgart's Sebastian Hoeness and Lens's Pierre Sage, were considered, but Iraola was always the preferred choice and the only one formally approached.

Key Role of Richard Hughes

The appointment was spearheaded by sporting director Richard Hughes, who previously worked with Iraola at Bournemouth. Hughes, along with Michael Edwards—chief executive of football for Liverpool's owners Fenway Sports Group—conducted an in-depth review of the team's shortcomings under Slot and concluded that a change was necessary to revitalise the squad's performance.

Formal negotiations with Iraola and his agent, Iñaki Ibáñez, began earlier this week and progressed smoothly. From the outset, Iraola made it clear that Liverpool were his only desired destination after his contract with Bournemouth expired. Hughes shares a strong working relationship with Ibáñez, who also represents Xabi Alonso, though Liverpool did not approach their former midfielder, who became Chelsea manager on 17 May.

Contract and Backroom Staff

Iraola arrived on Merseyside on Thursday and signed a deal that runs until the end of the 2027/28 season. While shorter than Liverpool's typical long-term contracts, this length aligns with Iraola's career management style at Bournemouth and Rayo Vallecano. He plans to bring his trusted assistants from Bournemouth—Tommy Elphick and Shaun Cooper—along with analyst Tom Webber and fitness coach Pablo de la Torre. However, Elphick and Cooper remain under contract with the south coast club, and Liverpool have yet to finalise any additions to their backroom team.

Why Iraola Was Chosen

Liverpool regard Iraola as one of the best coaches available, perfectly suited to evolving the team's style after Slot's disappointing tenure. His proven track record in the Premier League, where he improved Bournemouth year-on-year despite limited resources and implemented an exciting, high-pressing system, was a major draw. Additionally, his ability to develop players individually and collectively, along with his strong personality and leadership skills, appealed to the club's decision-makers.
