The Wallabies opened their Nations Championship campaign with a hard-fought 28-24 victory over Ireland at a packed stadium in Sydney on Saturday. In a match that swung back and forth, Australia scored a crucial try in the dying minutes to snatch the win from the visitors.
Match Highlights
Ireland started strongly, taking an early lead through a try from winger James Lowe. However, the Wallabies responded with two tries of their own, including a spectacular solo effort from fullback Tom Wright. At halftime, Australia led 14-10.
The second half saw Ireland regain the lead with a try from captain Johnny Sexton, who also added two penalties to put Ireland up 24-21 with ten minutes remaining. But the Wallabies showed composure, driving deep into Irish territory. A powerful maul led to a try from hooker David Porecki, converted by flyhalf Noah Lolesio, to make it 28-24 with three minutes left.
Defensive Stand
Ireland had one last chance, winning a penalty near the Australian line. Instead of kicking for goal, they opted for a lineout drive, but the Wallabies defense held firm, forcing a turnover to seal the victory.
"The boys showed incredible character to stay in the fight and finish the job," said Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt. "Ireland are a world-class side, and to beat them takes a full 80-minute performance."
Key Statistics
The Wallabies dominated possession (58%) and territory (62%), while Ireland made more tackles (142 to 118). Australia also won 15 of their 17 lineouts, a key factor in their win. The attendance was 48,231.
"We're disappointed not to come away with the win," said Ireland coach Andy Farrell. "We had our chances, but credit to Australia, they took theirs."
The win gives Australia a strong start in the Nations Championship, with matches against Argentina and South Africa to come.
