Newcastle Knights forward Jermaine McEwen has been referred to the NRL integrity unit after being charged with low-range drink driving and driving while his licence was suspended. The 21-year-old will face court later this month to answer the charges.
Club informed, integrity unit notified
According to reports, McEwen informed Newcastle club officials of the incident, which was then reported by the Knights to the NRL integrity unit. The club issued a brief statement on Wednesday afternoon, confirming the matter is being handled through the proper channels.
“A thorough process continues to be undertaken by all parties required,” the club said. “Until due process is completed, the Newcastle Knights will not make any further comment.”
McEwen’s strong season
Despite the off-field issue, McEwen has been named in the Knights’ side to face Melbourne at AAMI Park on Friday night. The incident is a setback for the young forward, who has established himself as a durable 80-minute back-rower under coach Justin Holbrook this season.
McEwen has played 12 consecutive matches this year, missing just 21 minutes of action in total. His consistent performances have been a key factor in Newcastle’s rise to fourth place on the NRL ladder.
The 2023 SG Ball player of the year has progressed through the club’s pathways system and was recently re-signed by Newcastle until the end of 2028. At the time of the contract extension, Holbrook praised McEwen’s development.
“Jermaine continues to exceed our expectations this year,” Holbrook said.
The Knights have stated they will not comment further until the legal and integrity processes are completed. McEwen’s court appearance is expected later this month.
