Grimsby Town has paid tribute to Alex Hughes, the son of former Manchester United and Wales striker Mark Hughes, following his death at the age of 38. Hughes, who was the player recruitment lead at the League Two club, died unexpectedly, leaving the football community in mourning.
Hughes Family Heartbroken
The Hughes family released a statement through the League Managers Association expressing their devastation. “We are heartbroken at the sudden and unexpected loss of Alex,” the statement read. “He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.”
Alex Hughes joined Grimsby Town in 2025 as recruitment lead, quickly becoming a valued member of the club. Before his role at Grimsby, he held positions at Blackburn Rovers, Manchester City, Fulham, Fylde, and Morecambe, building a reputation as a dedicated football professional.
Club Pays Tribute
Grimsby Town released a statement honoring Hughes, describing him as “a devoted husband, proud father, beloved son, brother and friend, and a highly valued member of the Grimsby family.” The club noted that he worked closely with head coach David Artell and played an important role in shaping the club’s recruitment strategy.
“Alex joined the Mariners in 2025 and quickly became a valued and highly respected member of the football club,” the statement continued. “The thoughts and heartfelt condolences of everyone at Grimsby are with Alex’s wife, Jessica, his children Sebastian and Leonardo, his parents Mark and Jill, his brother Curtis, his sister Xenna, and all of his family, friends and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”
Colleagues Remember His Warmth
Grimsby’s chief executive officer, Polly Bancroft, paid a personal tribute: “Alex was a much-loved and highly respected member of the Grimsby family. His professionalism, dedication and warmth made a lasting impact on everyone who worked with him. I thoroughly enjoyed working alongside Alex and will remember him not only as an outstanding colleague, but as a genuinely kind person who had a positive effect on those around him. He will be greatly missed across the club and beyond.”
A Brief Playing Career and Transition to Recruitment
Hughes had a brief playing career with Stockport County and Wrexham before moving into football analysis and recruitment. He joined Blackburn Rovers in 2007 as a performance analyst during his father’s tenure as manager. He followed Mark Hughes to Manchester City in 2008 and later worked with him again at Fulham, before forging his own path abroad and eventually returning to England.
The football community has expressed condolences, with many remembering Alex Hughes for his dedication to the sport and his kind nature.
