Farrell signs new Ireland deal until 2031

Andy Farrell has signed a new contract to remain as Ireland's head coach until 2031, ending any speculation about a possible return to English rugby. The 51-year-old has committed to Ireland's next two World Cup campaigns, a move that has been hailed as a major boost for Irish rugby.

Farrell's achievements with Ireland

Since taking over from Joe Schmidt in late 2019, Farrell has led Ireland to two Six Nations titles, including a grand slam in 2023, and a historic Test series win over the All Blacks in New Zealand. He also guided the British and Irish Lions to a series victory in Australia in 2025.

Contract details and reaction

The new five-year deal removes any chance of England luring him back to Twickenham after next year's Rugby World Cup. IRFU chief executive Kevin Potts said: "We are delighted to secure Andy through to 2031. He is a truly world-class coach and an exceptional leader who has helped shape Ireland as one of the most exciting and consistent teams in the world."

Performance director David Humphreys added: "This commitment gives us real confidence as we look ahead and allows us to keep developing our playing group, strengthen our high-performance systems, and ensure alignment from the pathway right through to the senior team."

Farrell's vision for the future

Farrell said: "I am incredibly proud to continue this journey with Irish rugby. What excites me most is the quality of talent coming through. There is a real confidence in the system that has been built across the provinces and age-grade programmes, and I believe with sustained effort that the best is yet to come."

The announcement comes after a mixed Six Nations campaign where Ireland finished second, securing a triple crown after defeats to New Zealand and South Africa in the autumn and an opening loss to France in Paris. However, subsequent wins over Italy, England, Wales and Scotland ensured a strong finish.
