In Sydney's Lilyfield, the Wests Tigers' spiritual home, Leichhardt Oval, is set to undergo a major facelift. On Sunday, in the last game before it reopens in 2028, the Tigers – and their fans – saw the stadium out in style with a win over the Gold Coast Titans.
Final Match at Leichhardt Oval
Spectators waited for gates to open for the final time ahead of a redevelopment of Leichhardt Oval. The sun set over Wayne Pearce hill, and storm clouds rolled over the ground as fans enjoyed the atmosphere during the round 15 NRL match between Wests Tigers and Gold Coast Titans.
A Historic Venue
The hallowed ground is steeped in history. In 1957, TCN Channel Nine screened the first rugby league match shown on television from the oval. A foundation club of the NSW Rugby League, the Balmain Tigers claimed 11 premierships, including five since the club made Leichhardt Oval its home in 1934.
The Match
The Tigers took to the field with determination. Jock Madden kicked for goal, and Jarome Luai celebrated scoring a try. Tigers coach Benji Marshall celebrated with his daughter after the team's win. Tigers players, support staff, and families posed with fans after the game.
Redevelopment Plans
The long-awaited upgrade is budgeted at $40 million. The match on Sunday night was the last at the oval until 2028, when the redevelopment is scheduled to be completed. Fans basked in the afternoon sun before the storm, showing their stripes one last time at this beloved NRL colosseum.
