The Dolphins have continued their impressive ascent up the NRL ladder, establishing themselves as genuine premiership contenders with a commanding 40-14 victory over the Cowboys. The match, played in front of a sold-out crowd at Queensland Country Bank Stadium in Townsville on Saturday, saw the Cowboys fired up for prop Coen Hess's 200th NRL game. However, the Dolphins proved a class above, scoring seven tries to three to secure their fifth consecutive win under coach Kristian Woolf. This victory moves them into fifth place on the ladder, with a bye next week before back-to-back clashes against the Warriors and Panthers.
Key Performances
Selwyn Cobbo continued his stellar form, amassing 321 running metres. Kodi Nikorima toyed with the defence, while backrowers Connelly Lemuelu and Kulikefu Finefeuiaki caused nightmares for the Cowboys on the edges.
First Half Action
Cobbo opened the scoring in the sixth minute, pouncing on a dropped ball and racing 85 metres to score. Murray Tualagi replied for the Cowboys, catching a neat pass from Liam Sutton and falling over the line out wide. Tom Chester then put the Cowboys in front after the bunker overruled the original no-try decision. Chester appeared to lose the ball under pressure from Cobbo, but the bunker adjudged the Dolphins winger had knocked it back, allowing Chester to touchdown.
The Dolphins capitalised on a weight of possession and Cowboys errors. Jack Bostock first put Jamayne Isaako over, then fed Isaiya Katoa to score, sending the visitors into the break leading 16-10.
Second Half Dominance
Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow extended the lead eight minutes into the second half, finishing off a Lemuelu break. The Cowboys responded immediately through Chester, but the Dolphins took control from there. Kurt Donoghoe found a gap in the defence, Cobbo scored his second, and Tom Flegler powered over to seal the win.
Origin Implications
Both the Dolphins and Cowboys had Queensland State of Origin players on the field, including Tabuai-Fidow, Cobbo, Flegler, Max Plath, and Reuben Cotter. Finefeuiaki, the Maroons' 20th man in Game One, showed he would not look out of place if elevated into Billy Slater's top 19.
Disciplinary Concerns
Cowboys centre Chester, who was outstanding in a losing side, was placed on report for a high shot on Cobbo and faces an anxious wait for the match review committee's decision.
