The Melbourne Demons have confirmed that young midfielder Andy Moniz-Wakefield will miss the remainder of the 2026 season after suffering a second anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture. The devastating injury occurred during the final quarter of Melbourne's clash against Greater Western Sydney (GWS) on Sunday.
The 22-year-old was forced to leave the field late in the fourth quarter, and subsequent scans revealed the worst-case scenario: a torn ACL for the second time in his young career. This latest setback comes just over a year after he sustained a severe knee injury involving his ACL, MCL, and PCL during a pre-season game in 2025.
Club expresses support for Moniz-Wakefield
Melbourne's general manager of football, Alan Richardson, expressed the club's disappointment and unwavering support for the player. "This is disappointing news for Andy, particularly given the work he put in over the pre-season to return from his previous knee injury. We all really feel for him," Richardson said.
He added, "Right now, we will make sure Andy is well supported through this tough time." The club is expected to provide comprehensive medical and psychological assistance to aid his recovery.
Background and impact
Moniz-Wakefield had been making a strong comeback, having impressed in the Victorian Football League (VFL) the week prior. Against GWS, he managed 10 disposals before his afternoon was cut short. The injury is a significant blow to both the player and the Demons, who were hoping to see him develop further in the senior side.
This marks the second major knee reconstruction for Moniz-Wakefield, who originally ruptured his ACL, MCL, and PCL in a pre-season incident in 2025. The Demons will now be without his services for the remainder of the 2026 season as he embarks on another long road to recovery.
