Daley Set to Drop Origin Star Ethan Strange for Returning Moses
Daley to Drop Strange as Moses Returns for Game 2

NSW Blues coach Laurie Daley has hinted at a controversial selection decision for State of Origin Game 2, with reports emerging that Ethan Strange is set to be dropped to the bench despite a stellar performance in the series opener.

Strange's Stellar Game 1 Performance

Ethan Strange, who was a late call-up to the starting side after Mitch Moses withdrew with a hamstring injury, was arguably the Blues' best player in their 22-20 comeback victory. The young halfback was named fans' man of the match, making 22 tackles including a try-saving effort on Maroons captain Cameron Munster, running for 134 metres off 15 carries, and scoring a brilliant try.

Despite this, Daley has indicated that Moses, who is fit again, will likely partner Nathan Cleary in the halves for Game 2. Speaking on Channel 7, Daley praised Strange but confirmed Moses' importance to the team.

Daley's Comments on the Selection

"Ethan trained a bit of everywhere. He didn't really have many reps going into Origin 1, so his performance was outstanding," Daley said. "I think we all know what a quality player Mitch Moses is, and he's a big part of the team. Obviously he's missed the last couple of Origin games but I think he's a big part of our team.

"His style of footy with his kicking game, his ability to organise, his ability to pass is different to Ethan's but if they are both fit they will both be there somewhere. I think Mitch has proven himself at that level in the past, and he's a very important member of the team.

"It's not a bad hammy, and to be fair, the doc said if he had a week to recover, he would. It was really minor. The beauty with Ethan is you can also play him anywhere, not just No. 6, but in the centres and even lock."

Other Selection Headaches for Daley

Daley will closely monitor Moses during Parramatta's clash with Canterbury on Monday before finalising his Game 2 squad. If Moses emerges unscathed, he is expected to start at five-eighth, with Strange moving to the bench.

However, the coach faces other tough decisions. Bulldogs captain Stephen Crichton is in doubt for the Eels match and potentially Origin 2, which could open the door for Penrith's Casey McLean to make his starting debut in the centres. Canterbury's Jacob Kiraz has also impressed on return and is in Origin contention.

If Tolu Koula is fit, dropping him would be difficult after he impressed before being ruled out of Game 1 with concussion following a high shot from Kalyn Ponga. However, if Crichton is ruled out, McLean may start, and a spot on the extended bench could open for Kiraz.

Liam Martin's Potential Return

Another decision facing Daley is whether to recall Liam Martin. Victor Radley was influential off the bench in Game 1 but may make way for Martin, a proven Origin performer. Martin has been hampered by a knee injury in 2026 but returned successfully for Penrith against the Warriors on the weekend.
