Benji Marshall drops teen prodigy Heamasi Makasini to aid development

Wests Tigers coach Benji Marshall has explained his decision to drop 18-year-old Heamasi Makasini from the NRL side for Thursday's clash with Canberra, citing the need to manage the teenager's long-term development and confidence issues.

Makasini, who drew comparisons to Jonah Lomu after a powerful run in a trial win over Penrith, struggled under the high ball in last week's 21-20 loss to Brisbane, his seventh NRL game. Marshall praised the youngster's start to the season but said it was time to ease the pressure.

“He’s having a bit of confidence issues at the moment, but he’ll bounce back,” Marshall said. The coach opted not to send Makasini to NSW Cup due to a minor foot issue, instead giving him a full break.

Starford Toa returns from a foot injury to partner Taylan May at centre, while Luke Laulilii comes in on the wing. Fullback Jahream Bula is fit to play after being knocked about in the Brisbane loss.

Marshall also praised Canberra coach Ricky Stuart, noting their shared preference for coaching from the sideline. “What I love about Ricky is his passion... there’s no bullshit with him,” Marshall said.
