George Russell secured pole position for the Austrian Grand Prix in a dramatic qualifying session, capitalizing on a late crash by Max Verstappen that brought out yellow flags in the final seconds. The Mercedes driver posted a lap time of 1 minute 6.113 seconds, beating Ferrari's Charles Leclerc by 0.236 seconds. Lewis Hamilton qualified third, also for Ferrari.
Verstappen's crash changes the outcome
Max Verstappen lost control of his Red Bull at turn nine, hitting the barriers heavily. The yellow flags were immediately shown, forcing other drivers to slow down. Russell had already lifted off the throttle when he saw the flags, ensuring his lap time stood despite the caution. Verstappen will start fifth, behind Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) in fourth. Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, who also eased off, qualified sixth and seventh respectively.
Russell's reaction and team dynamics
Russell expressed elation after the session, stating, "I feel incredible, it was such an amazing lap. I saw the yellow and did a big lift into the corner. I was five-tenths up and came out of the corner two and a half tenths up." The pole is a crucial result for Russell, who trails teammate Antonelli by 50 points in the championship. Mercedes have now taken pole in every qualifying session this season.
Antonelli, the championship leader, was close to Russell on his hot lap but will start fourth after lifting off under the yellows. Hamilton, who won the previous round in Spain, could not match Mercedes' single-lap pace.
Qualifying session details
In the initial runs of Q3, Lando Norris set the pace with a 1:06.090, but Verstappen responded with a 1:06.475. Antonelli then went quicker by six-hundredths, with Russell taking second. Hamilton ran wide at turn three and did not set a time initially. In the final runs, Hamilton took provisional pole briefly before Leclerc beat him. Verstappen's crash then allowed Russell to claim pole.
The stewards noted a yellow flag infringement but deemed no further investigation necessary.
