Oscar Piastri Finishes Fourth at Austrian Grand Prix, Russell Wins
Oscar Piastri Fourth at Austrian GP, Russell Victorious

Australian Formula 1 driver Oscar Piastri secured an impressive fourth-place finish at the Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday, as Mercedes' George Russell claimed his first victory in 112 days. Russell crossed the line 1.6 seconds ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen, with Kimi Antonelli finishing third to maintain his championship lead.

Piastri's Strong Performance

Starting from seventh on the grid, Piastri moved up three positions to finish ahead of Lewis Hamilton, who placed fifth. Hamilton, driving for Ferrari, was unable to replicate his maiden win for the team at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix the previous weekend. Piastri admitted surprise at his result, stating: "A bit, yeah. I think today was a really strong afternoon." He added: "I think it was a bit of a surprise that the Ferraris were not stronger, but on a personal level I thought it was a really good race."

Ferrari's Struggles

Charles Leclerc started the race from second position, with Hamilton third, but both Ferrari drivers dropped back due to insufficient power to match the leaders. Piastri noted the positive of beating Ferrari but acknowledged the gap to Mercedes and Red Bull: "We've still got a lot to find to catch Mercedes and now Red Bull look very quick as well, so it's going to be a constantly changing order, I think."

Other Results and Championship Standings

Isack Hadjar, Verstappen's Red Bull teammate, finished sixth, while reigning world champion Lando Norris, Piastri's McLaren teammate, crossed in seventh. Piastri now sits fourth in the drivers' championship with 80 points. Russell's win moved him into second place in the standings, overtaking Hamilton. Mercedes extended their lead in the constructors' championship thanks to Russell's victory and Antonelli's third-place finish.

Russell's Emotional Victory

Russell, who had not won since the season-opening Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne on March 8, celebrated with an exuberant "Yabba-dabba-doo!" over his team radio as he crossed the line. "Incredible to be back on the top step again," the Mercedes driver said. "It has been a while so I am going to enjoy this one this evening, a lot of hard work with my team to get us back on track." He also looked ahead to the next race: "I look forward to heading to Silverstone next week (British Grand Prix) and seeing the home fans. I am sure it is going to be great."

Antonelli's Reflection

Championship leader Antonelli admitted to a slow start: "I was a bit too excited in the first laps and I didn't drive well and made too many mistakes. The pace at the end was very strong so it was a shame I joined the party a little bit late."
