A Western Australian horse trainer has been banned from racing for five years after being found guilty of possessing illegal electrical devices used to shock gallopers to run faster.
Gordon O'Donnell was charged under the Australian Rules of Racing for possessing the devices, which included a cattle prod and electrical saddle blanket.
In handing down the penalties, the stewards panel took into consideration the damage done to the integrity, image and welfare of racing.
Chairman of Stipendiary Stewards John Zucal says the disqualification is effective immediately.
"Our feeling was that as all three offences had resulted from a single stable inspection on August 1, 2003, the penalties should be served concurrently, which essentially means that Mr O'Donnell is disqualified for five years," he said.
