Jockey Bailey Rogerson has been brought out of an induced coma after a horrific fall during a race in New Zealand. The 24-year-old suffered a fractured skull and was placed in a coma amid fears of a brain bleed following the incident at Arawa Park.
Rogerson, the granddaughter of Melbourne Cup-winning trainer Graeme Rogerson, came off her horse Mandolo during the sixth race. She remains in intensive care as doctors assess her condition, including possible additional fractures in her neck.
Her grandfather confirmed that doctors planned to bring her out of the coma on Monday. “She is very tough,” he said, adding that her mother has been by her side constantly.
French jockey Corentin Berge has been suspended for one month by stewards for causing the fall. He was found guilty of “allowing his mount to dangerously move out and eventually check Rogerson’s horse.”
Earlier that day, Rogerson had ridden her 58th career winner. The racing community has expressed support for her recovery.
