Darley Australia has made a surprise decision to retire two of the country's top colts, Tentyris and Observer, sending them to stud for the upcoming breeding season. The move has drawn frustration from punters who hoped to see the horses continue racing.
Tentyris, a son of Street Boss, won the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes in record time and also claimed the Group 1 Lightning Stakes. He is just the fourth three-year-old colt to win the Lightning in 25 years, with the previous three all enjoying successful stud careers. He will stand at Kelvinside in New South Wales for $88,000 (inclusive of GST).
Observer, a son of Ghaiyyath, won the Group 1 Australian Guineas and Victoria Derby, showing versatility from 1400m to 2500m. He will stand at Northwood Park in Victoria for $33,000 (including GST).
Alastair Pulford, Darley's Head of Stallions, said both horses have won the right races against top opposition and bring strong pedigrees. He noted strong early interest from breeders, as the market for elite new locally raced stallions is thin this season.
Darley Australia will announce its full 2026 stallion roster and fees on Thursday at 3pm.
