Four-time Tour de France champion Tadej Pogacar has emerged as one of the most unexpected high-profile fans of the Socceroos. The Slovenian cycling superstar, interviewed by SBS in Paris a day before the Tour's first stage, revealed his surprising allegiances during a lighthearted exchange.
Pogacar's Surprising Declaration
When reminded that Slovenia did not qualify for the FIFA World Cup this year, a playful Pogacar was asked if rumors about his support for the Socceroos were true. “Yeah, Australia all the way!” he said. “Go Socceroos!”
While the modern-day cycling legend may have been slightly influenced in his response, it is a vote of support few anticipated. Given his familiarity with wearing the yellow jersey, a Socceroos kit would certainly not look out of place on him.
Tour de France Ambitions
Pogacar is an overwhelming favorite to become a five-time Tour de France winner, with the iconic race running from July 4 to 26. If he achieves this feat, the 27-year-old would become just the fourth man to do so, and the first since 1995. Lance Armstrong won seven tours before his record was stripped due to a major doping investigation.
Socceroos World Cup Campaign
Meanwhile, the Socceroos will look to stay alive in the World Cup by beating Egypt in the round of 32 overnight. Pogacar's endorsement adds a unique twist to Australia's campaign, as the team seeks to advance further in the tournament.
