New Zealand Stun Egypt 2-1 in World Cup 2026 Opener

New Zealand kicked off their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a stunning 2-1 victory over Egypt in Group G at the Houston Texans Stadium on Monday. The All Whites secured their first World Cup win since 2010, with goals from captain Chris Wood and defender Liberato Cacace.

First-Half Dominance

New Zealand took control early, pressing high and forcing Egypt into defensive errors. In the 12th minute, Wood latched onto a through ball from Ryan Thomas and slotted past Egypt goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy. The lead was doubled in the 34th minute when Cacace headed home a corner from Joe Bell, leaving Egypt stunned.

Egypt struggled to create clear chances, with Mohamed Salah largely isolated up front. The Pharaohs' best opportunity came just before halftime, but a shot from Mahmoud Trezeguet was saved by New Zealand goalkeeper Stefan Marinovic.

Egypt's Second-Half Fightback

Egypt emerged with renewed energy after the break. Coach Hossam Hassan made two substitutions, bringing on attacking players to increase pressure. In the 58th minute, Salah pulled one back with a clinical finish from inside the box after a pass from Ahmed Hegazy.

New Zealand defended resolutely, absorbing pressure and countering when possible. Egypt pushed for an equalizer, with Salah hitting the post in the 78th minute. However, the All Whites held on for a famous victory.

Historic Win for New Zealand

This win marks New Zealand's first World Cup victory since a 1-0 win over Slovakia in 2010. Coach Darren Bazeley praised his team's discipline. "We knew Egypt would come at us, but the boys showed incredible character to see it through," Bazeley said. "This is a huge step for New Zealand football."

The result puts New Zealand top of Group G, with Egypt needing to bounce back in their next match against Portugal. The All Whites face South Korea in their second group game.
