Mexico claimed a crucial 2-1 win over South Korea in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group A opener at the Estadio Azteca, courtesy of first-half strikes from Hirving Lozano and Raul Jimenez. The victory gives El Tri an early advantage in a group that also features Sweden and Nigeria.
First-half fireworks
Mexico started brightly and took the lead in the 17th minute when Lozano latched onto a through ball from Andres Guardado and slotted past South Korean goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu. The lead was doubled just before half-time as Jimenez converted a penalty after being fouled by Kim Min-jae.
South Korea, however, refused to buckle. They pulled one back in the 53rd minute through a stunning free-kick from Son Heung-min, which curled over the wall and dipped under the crossbar. The goal set up a tense finale, but Mexico's defense held firm to secure all three points.
