Ivan Perisic made it 3-0 just before halftime, slotting home from a Josip Juranovic cross.

Ghana pulled one back in the 55th minute through a penalty converted by Jordan Ayew after a foul by Dejan Lovren. The Black Stars pushed for a second goal but were unable to breach Croatia's defense. Croatia goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic made several crucial saves to preserve the lead.

Luka Modric was named man of the match for his midfield control and goal. Croatia dominated possession with 62% and had 14 shots to Ghana's 8. The win puts Croatia top of Group L, level on points with Nigeria who drew earlier.
According to Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic, 'We played with great intensity and discipline. The early goals settled our nerves. We respect Ghana but we were the better team.' Ghana coach Otto Addo commented, 'We showed spirit in the second half but the damage was done in the first 45 minutes. We must learn quickly.'
