Austria edge past Jordan 2-1 in World Cup Group J thriller
Austria beat Jordan 2-1 in World Cup Group J clash

Austria began their World Cup campaign with a narrow 2-1 win over Jordan in an entertaining Group J encounter at the Al Janoub Stadium. Marcel Sabitzer opened the scoring in the 12th minute with a powerful strike from the edge of the box, before Marko Arnautovic doubled the lead with a clinical finish just before half-time.

First half dominance

The Austrians controlled the early proceedings, pressing high and creating several chances. Sabitzer’s goal came after a neat interchange with Christoph Baumgartner, who slipped the ball through the Jordanian defence. Arnautovic then made it 2-0 in the 43rd minute, latching onto a long ball from David Alaba and slotting past the goalkeeper.

Jordan struggled to contain Austria’s attacking flair, with the midfield trio of Sabitzer, Alaba, and Xaver Schlager dictating the tempo. The Asian side had a few glimpses, notably through Moussa Al-Tamari, whose curling effort was saved by Patrick Pentz.

Second half fightback

Jordan came out stronger after the break, pulling one back in the 58th minute through a header from Yazan Al-Naimat. The goal set up a tense finale, with Jordan pushing for an equalizer. Austria’s defence, marshalled by Philipp Lienhart, held firm despite late pressure.

Coach Ralf Rangnick praised his team’s resilience: “It was a tough match, but we showed character. Jordan made it difficult, but we deserved the win.” Jordan’s coach Adnan Hamad lamented missed opportunities: “We had chances but didn’t take them. We must learn quickly.”

  • Key moment: Arnautovic’s goal just before half-time gave Austria a crucial cushion.
  • Player of the match: Marcel Sabitzer for his goal and all-round midfield display.
  • Stat: Austria had 58% possession and 12 shots to Jordan’s 8.

The victory puts Austria top of Group J, with matches against Senegal and Netherlands to come. Jordan will face Senegal next, needing a result to keep their knockout hopes alive.
