Argentina Dominate Jordan in World Cup Opener
Argentina kicked off their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a commanding 3-0 victory over Jordan in Group J at the Lusail Stadium on Saturday. Lionel Messi opened the scoring in the 23rd minute with a trademark free-kick, before Julian Alvarez doubled the lead just before halftime. Lautaro Martinez sealed the win with a header in the 67th minute.
Messi Magic Breaks Deadlock
The reigning champions controlled possession from the outset, but Jordan's disciplined defense held firm until Messi stepped up to a free-kick 25 yards out. The Inter Miami star curled the ball over the wall and into the top corner, leaving Jordan goalkeeper Yazid Abu Layla with no chance. It was Messi's ninth World Cup goal, moving him level with Diego Maradona in Argentina's all-time list.
Jordan had a golden opportunity to equalize in the 35th minute when Ali Olwan broke through on goal, but Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez made a crucial save with his feet. The save proved vital as Alvarez scored two minutes later, tapping in from close range after a deflected cross from Angel Di Maria.
Second Half Control
Argentina continued to dominate after the break, with Rodrigo De Paul hitting the post from distance. The third goal arrived when Nahuel Molina's cross found Martinez unmarked at the back post, and the Inter Milan striker powered a header into the ground and past Abu Layla.
Jordan rarely threatened in the second half, with Argentina's defense marshaled by Cristian Romero and Nicolas Otamendi. The win puts Argentina top of Group J on goal difference ahead of their next match against Saudi Arabia.
Key Statistics
Argentina had 68% possession and 15 shots to Jordan's 3. Messi completed 89% of his passes and created four chances. The victory extends Argentina's unbeaten run to 12 matches in all competitions.
"We knew it would be a tough game, but the team showed great character and quality," said Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni after the match. "Messi's goal gave us the confidence to push on, and the defense was solid."
Jordan coach Adnan Hamad admitted his side were outclassed. "Argentina are world champions for a reason. We had our chances but couldn't take them. We must learn from this and focus on the next game."
