USA reach World Cup knockouts with win over Socceroos

The United States secured their place in the knockout stages of the 2026 World Cup with a 2-0 victory over the Socceroos in Seattle. The match, played at Lumen Field, saw the USA dominate from the start, taking the lead through an own goal from Cameron Burgess in the 11th minute.

Early Own Goal Sets Tone

Just 11 minutes in, a nightmare start for Cameron Burgess and the Socceroos when the central defender bundled the ball into his own net after Folarin Balogun’s cross. The goal pleased the USA fans, both in the stadium and those watching from the Fan Zone on the National Mall in Washington DC.

Freeman Doubles the Lead

Late in the first half, Alex Freeman ran on to a deflected shot and headed it in. Celebrations were delayed due to an offside check by the VAR. There were two US players in an offside position, but Freeman wasn’t one of them. The US substitutes ran alongside Freeman to celebrate.

Fan Reactions

Fans from both sides seemed to have put the confected hostility behind them. Home fans watched the match at Union Station in Los Angeles, California, while over in Sydney, despite it being in the early hours, fans watched the match on large screens. Plenty of early birds were out in Melbourne too.

Supporters at the Fan Festival in Atlanta, Georgia, also enjoyed the match. The atmosphere was electric, with a bit of food-based banter from the US fans, which the Australians equalised in the food banter match.

Paris Hilton checked out the stadium before leading the USA pre-game chants. Socceroos fans in gold could be seen in the crowd during a military helicopter fly past before the anthems. USA players joined in with the Star-Spangled Banner, and Tete Yengi reacted after the Australian national anthem.

Weston McKennie went close with a header, and Jacob Italiano of Australia tackled Folarin Balogun. Aiden O’Neill whipped in a corner as the Socceroos tried to get back on terms.
