Stokes to Return as England Captain at Trent Bridge

Brendon McCullum has confirmed that Ben Stokes will return as England captain for the upcoming Test at Trent Bridge, ending speculation about his leadership status following a recent off-field incident.

McCullum Backs Stokes as Captain

Speaking to the media, McCullum stated, "Yeah, at the moment that’s what we’re planning. The rest of the squad will be announced this afternoon once we’ve told a few of the lads." This comes after Stokes was involved in a disciplinary matter that led to a formal process, but McCullum emphasized his support for the player.

Support Through Difficulties

McCullum addressed the mixed messaging around Stokes' mental state, saying, "People always have a difference of opinion, that’s the way things are – people read things differently. From my point of view I’ve been speaking to Ben every day since the incident and have obviously been trying to be supportive." He noted that Stokes played cricket this week and scored runs, looking "like he had a bit of pep in his step."

Separating Actions from the Man

Reflecting on the incident, McCullum explained, "You’ve got to separate the actions from the man. I was disappointed with the actions, which didn’t meet the standards we’ve set for ourselves, but then you support the man. I’ve always firmly believed in that." He added that Stokes shares the same vision for a long-term sustainable England team.

Disciplinary Process and Public Statements

When asked if he and Rob Key could have backed Stokes more publicly in the immediate aftermath, McCullum responded, "There was a formal disciplinary process we had to go through. Until you have that information, nobody is able to make any decisions or make any emphatic public statements." He stressed that people make mistakes and that supporting the individual remains key.

Praise for Joe Root

McCullum also praised stand-in captain Joe Root, saying, "I want to make special mention of Joe Root. The way he picked up the responsibility in a difficult period… I can’t speak highly enough of him." He expressed hope that England can close out a series win against New Zealand, calling it "a mighty achievement, particularly after the last week which has been very difficult."
