Steve Clarke has resigned as Scotland’s head coach, with the decision announced minutes after the country’s elimination from the World Cup 2026 was confirmed. Clarke, who had been in charge since 2019, signed a four-year contract extension shortly before the tournament.
Elimination and tournament performance
Scotland gained three points in the group stage, courtesy of a 1-0 win over Haiti. Defeats by Morocco and Brazil followed, ending their involvement in the tournament. Clarke also guided Scotland to the European Championship in 2021 and 2024.
Reactions and farewell
Ian Maxwell, the Scottish Football Association chief executive, said: “We thank Steve for his record-breaking contribution and know that when the disappointment of World Cup elimination subsides, the Scotland supporters will be thankful for the memories of marching with pride at major tournaments once again.”
In an open letter, Clarke said: “The most emotional part of this goodbye is for my players, without whom we wouldn’t have had any of the memories that we’ve accumulated from 2019 until now. They deserve all the praise and adulation that they receive and it was truly an honour to be called their Gaffer. Thanks for having me and good luck to my successor.”
