Rachin Ravindra's unbeaten 60 guided New Zealand to a lead of 204 after England collapsed on a gripping third day of the third Test at Trent Bridge. England lost eight wickets for 130 runs in the first two sessions, handing New Zealand a dominant position despite Jofra Archer's fiery spell after tea.
Pitch changes character after first two days
The pitch, which had been a road for the first two days, became more challenging with lateral movement and inconsistent bounce due to a drop in temperature and cloud cover. This led to 11 wickets falling on day three. England were bowled out for 354 in reply to New Zealand's first-innings 438, giving the visitors an 84-run lead.
Archer's spell gives England hope
Jofra Archer provided a glimmer of hope for England after tea, removing New Zealand's first-innings centurions Tom Latham and Devon Conway in quick succession. Archer trapped Latham lbw with his sixth ball and then cracked Conway on the helmet before edging him to slip. However, Archer's intervention came after England had already lost eight wickets for 130 runs.
New Zealand's bowlers shine
Nathan Smith and Will O'Rourke struck early, dismissing Joe Root for 21 and Jacob Bethell for 74. Zak Foulkes, who replaced the concussed Blair Tickner, proved decisive, bowling Ben Stokes for 15 and later removing Harry Brook for a slow 58 off 80 balls. Nathan Smith also accounted for Jamie Smith as New Zealand's bowlers made inroads.
Ravindra and Mitchell steady the ship
Despite Archer's burst and Gus Atkinson's wicket of Henry Nicholls, Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell put on an unbroken 69-run stand to take New Zealand to 120-3 at stumps. Ravindra was in fluent form, hitting boundaries early to spread the field, while Mitchell remained solid on 26. Their partnership stretched New Zealand's lead to 204.
England need seven wickets on day four
England will need seven wickets on day four and hope for another pitch shift to chase a target. Ben Stokes' side desperately needs a series win, but New Zealand are in a commanding position to secure a 2-1 series victory.
