The Matildas secured a 4-0 victory over Iran on the Gold Coast, advancing to the knockout stages of the Women's Asian Cup. Goals from Amy Sayer, Mary Fowler, and a brace from Alanna Kennedy propelled Australia to the win, but the team remains second in Group A on goal difference behind South Korea.
Australia and South Korea are level on six points, but South Korea holds a one-goal advantage. This means a draw in Sunday's final group match in Sydney would see South Korea finish top. The Matildas must win to claim first place.
The match saw five first-half goals for Australia, but two were ruled out by VAR for offside against Caitlin Foord and Sam Kerr. Sayer opened the scoring in the ninth minute with a cross that looped over Iranian goalkeeper Maryam Yektaei. Fowler added the second from close range, and Kennedy made it 3-0 before halftime. Kennedy headed in a fourth goal in the 55th minute.
Despite dominating with 30 shots and 78.6% possession, the Matildas could not add to their tally due to rain, substitutions, and injuries. Hayley Raso suffered two head knocks from Iranian clearances but was cleared of concussion, though her availability for Sunday's game is uncertain.
Coach Joe Montemurro praised the team's improved performance, saying, 'We were braver, we created many opportunities.' Defender Alanna Kennedy highlighted the contributions of younger players like Sayer and Fowler, stating, 'It's amazing to see the talent that we have coming through.'
The Matildas now prepare for a decisive clash against South Korea in Sydney on Sunday, with top spot in Group A at stake.
