Johan Manzambi's star turn from the substitutes' bench helped Switzerland overcome a sluggish start and secure a commanding 4-1 victory over 10-man Bosnia and Herzegovina in their World Cup group match. The 20-year-old, who had a disappointing Europa League final with Freiburg against Aston Villa, entered the game in the 73rd minute and within 166 seconds scored a superb volley to break the deadlock.
Manzambi's Impact
Until Manzambi's arrival, Switzerland had struggled to convert their dominance into goals, having managed only one goal from 26 shots in their previous draw against Qatar. But Manzambi brought poise and precision, lashing Amar Memic's headed clearance past goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj for his first goal and adding a second with a sumptuous finish. He also released Breel Embolo on goal, leading to a red card for Bosnia defender Tarik Muharemovic.
Late Goals Seal Victory
Rubén Vargas, another substitute, added a third goal before Granit Xhaka converted a stoppage-time penalty to make it 4-1. Ermin Mahmic had pulled one back for Bosnia with a powerful volley in stoppage time, but it was too little too late. Switzerland coach Murat Yakin praised Manzambi's street-football style, saying he can surprise opponents with his abilities.
Bosnia's Hopes Dwindle
Bosnia, led by veteran striker Edin Dzeko at 40 years old, now face a must-win match against Qatar to keep their knockout-stage hopes alive. Switzerland, meanwhile, are in a strong position ahead of their final group game against co-hosts Canada.
