Henry takes 6-29 as NZ crush England to level series

Matt Henry claimed four wickets in a devastating 25-minute spell on the final morning as New Zealand bowled England out for 209 to win the second Test by 253 runs at The Oval on Sunday, leveling the series at 1-1 with one match remaining.

Henry's ferocious spell shatters England's resistance

England resumed on 182 for five, needing a further 280 runs for an improbable victory. But Henry struck immediately, trapping Joe Root lbw for 77 with the first ball of the day. Root had added just two runs to his overnight score of 75. Henry then bowled Jofra Archer for a two-ball duck to complete a double-wicket maiden over.

The New Zealand paceman continued his hot streak by dismissing Matthew Fisher and Josh Tongue, both for ducks, in consecutive deliveries. That left England at 192 for nine, with only Sonny Baker and Jordan Cox left at the crease.

Quick finish inside the first hour

Cox (25) offered some resistance with a pair of boundaries, but Henry finished the match within an hour of the resumption by cleaning him up with a yorker. Henry's second-innings figures of six for 29 gave him a match haul of 11 wickets for 109 runs.

New Zealand had set England a mammoth target of 463 after declaring their second innings on 362. The hosts were bowled out for 291 in their first innings, conceding a lead of 100 runs.

Stokes and Atkinson in line for recall

The day began with news that Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson had been withdrawn from their County Championship matches at the request of the England and Wales Cricket Board. Both players were left out of the second Test after breaching a team curfew, but both now appear likely to be recalled for the third Test, which starts at Trent Bridge on Thursday.

England captain Joe Root said: "We were outplayed in all departments. Matt Henry bowled exceptionally well, and we just couldn't handle the pressure."
