England secured a thrilling 4-2 victory over Croatia in their World Cup Group L opener in Dallas, with Jude Bellingham's solo goal early in the second half proving decisive. The match was a rollercoaster of emotions as both teams traded blows in an absorbing contest.
First Half Drama
England were handed a golden opportunity to take the lead in the ninth minute when Luka Modric caught Noni Madueke with a high boot inside the penalty area. Harry Kane saw his initial spot-kick saved by Dominik Livakovic, but both Kane and Josko Gvardiol were penalised for encroachment, and the England captain coolly buried his second attempt.
Croatia levelled in the 36th minute through Martin Baturina, whose terrific strike from distance beat Jordan Pickford, who could only get his fingertips to the ball. England regained the lead six minutes later as Kane headed home Declan Rice's corner at the far post. However, Croatia equalised again before the break, with Petar Musa striding on to Ivan Perisic's clever header to make it 2-2 with the last kick of the first half.
Second Half Decisive Moments
The match was finely poised at half-time, but Thomas Tuchel's side regained the edge early in the second half. Jude Bellingham latched on to Elliot Anderson's long ball, veered in from the right, and drilled a low shot past Livakovic to restore England's lead in the 47th minute.
England peppered the Croatia goal in search of a fourth goal but had to wait until the 85th minute. Substitute Marcus Rashford neatly slotted home from Bukayo Saka's pass to seal a 4-2 victory and settle an absorbing contest.
England's win sets them up well in Group L, while Croatia will look to bounce back in their next match. A full match report from Dallas will follow.
