Opening batter Jake Weatherald has earned a place in Australia’s Ashes squad and is the leading candidate to partner Usman Khawaja at the top of the order for the first Test in Perth. However, chief selector George Bailey indicated that the final lineup will be decided after the upcoming round of Sheffield Shield matches.
Bailey praised Weatherald’s consistent performance over the past 18 to 24 months, highlighting his method and ability to complement other players in the squad. Weatherald averages nearly 38 in first-class cricket and has scored three half-centuries in three Shield matches this season.
Marnus Labuschagne, who was left out of the West Indies tour earlier this year, is also in the squad. Bailey confirmed Labuschagne has the capability to open and has made technical adjustments. Labuschagne has scored five centuries this season.
The fitness of all-rounder Cameron Green will influence the opening decision. Bailey wants to see Green bowl 15 to 20 overs in the upcoming Shield match but did not rule out selecting him as a specialist batter. Beau Webster has performed well as an all-rounder, averaging nearly 35 with the bat and 23 with the ball since his debut.
Sean Abbott and Brendan Doggett provide bowling depth, with Bailey noting that neither is clearly ahead of the other. The bowling lineup will depend on the surface and available players. Pat Cummins’ return for the second Test is not yet confirmed, so Steve Smith will lead the side in the first Test.
Weatherald’s inclusion dashes the hopes of recalls for Sam Konstas and Matt Renshaw. Bailey expressed sympathy for Konstas, who has faced immense scrutiny. The first Ashes Test begins on 21 November at Optus Stadium in Perth.
