Jade Melbourne has departed the Canberra Capitals after six seasons, signing a multi-year deal with the Bendigo Spirit. The 21-year-old point guard, who debuted for the Capitals as a 15-year-old, becomes the latest high-profile player to leave the club following a turbulent off-season.
Melbourne's decision to move on
Melbourne cited a desire for a new challenge and a fresh start as key reasons for her departure. "I've loved my time in Canberra and will always be grateful for the opportunities I've had here," Melbourne said in a statement. "But I felt it was time for a change and to take the next step in my career." The Bendigo Spirit, who finished fifth last season, see Melbourne as a cornerstone of their rebuild under new coach Kennedy Kereama.
Impact on the Capitals
The Capitals have now lost three key players this off-season: Melbourne, guard Maddison Rocci (who joined the Adelaide Lightning), and forward Alex Sharp (who signed with the Southside Flyers). The departures leave a significant hole in the Capitals' roster, with the club yet to announce any major signings for the upcoming season. Capitals coach Kristen Veal acknowledged the challenge, saying, "We're disappointed to lose Jade, but we respect her decision and wish her all the best. We're working hard to build a competitive squad."
Bendigo's gain
For the Spirit, Melbourne's arrival is a major coup. The club has struggled to retain talent in recent years, but Melbourne's signing signals a new ambition. "Jade is one of the most talented young players in the league," Kereama said. "Her experience and leadership will be invaluable for us." Melbourne averaged 12.3 points, 4.1 assists, and 3.5 rebounds per game last season, and her addition is expected to boost Bendigo's playoff hopes.
