Australian football fans have been left furious after the Socceroos unveiled a new jersey ahead of the upcoming World Cup, with the design drawing comparisons to American football attire. The gold and green kit maintains traditional colours but includes a controversial twist that has sparked widespread criticism.
NFL Influence Sparks Backlash
The front of the shirt prominently displays the NFL logo, while the sleeves feature American-style numbers and the Australian badge, deviating from the traditional front placement. Many fans have taken to social media to express their displeasure, accusing Football Australia of Americanising the iconic kit.
One disgruntled fan wrote, “Australia fans left fuming after Socceroos release NFL-style jersey ahead of World Cup.” Another questioned, “Is this some sort of sick joke?” A third commented, “Football Australia are selling us yankslop to celebrate our national humiliation.” Others simply stated, “Thanks I absolutely hate it,” and “Delete this.”
The reaction has been overwhelmingly negative, with supporters arguing that the design prioritises commercial interests over tradition.
Squad Announcement Also Faces Criticism
Adding to the controversy, the announcement of the 26-man World Cup squad has also met with backlash. Unsurprisingly, the inclusion of uncapped players Cristian Volpato and Tete Yengi has raised eyebrows, while notable omissions include Martin Boyle, Brandon Borello, Joe Gauci, and Kye Rowles.
Boyle, who has scored ten goals in 41 appearances for the Socceroos, was widely considered a certainty for the squad. His exclusion comes after Volpato defected from Italy to represent Australia. Boyle was part of the match day squad against Mexico but remained an unused substitute.
The combination of the controversial jersey and squad selection has left Australian fans frustrated ahead of the World Cup.
