Herrington shines on World Cup debut
Teenage defender Lucas Herrington has made history as the youngest Australian to start a World Cup match, playing a key role in the Socceroos' 0-0 draw against Paraguay that secured their place in the last 32. The 18-year-old's composure and physical dominance have drawn comparisons to a Rolls-Royce from teammate Harry Souttar, who said, "You wouldn't think that's his first World Cup game. The guy was absolutely composed, calm."
Transfer speculation and sell-on clause
Herrington has already been linked with a move to Barcelona, and his next transfer is expected to fetch a price close to or exceeding the Australian record of £15 million (approximately A$26 million) set by Souttar in 2023. Brisbane Roar, his former A-League club, negotiated a 20% sell-on clause with Colorado but cashed in for around A$500,000 before the World Cup, a decision that could cost them millions. Midfielder Connor Metcalfe said, "They'll probably be kicking themselves."
Herrington's calm demeanor
Herrington handles the transfer talk with the same calm he shows on the pitch. "I'm just trying to stay present and really enjoy this moment. It's my first one, hopefully first of many," he said. Metcalfe added, "Nothing really fazes him, he never looks nervous, I'm not nervous when he has the ball." Herrington attributes his serenity to natural ability: "I just believe in my abilities, believe in the team's abilities and just play what's in front of me."
Road to the World Cup
Herrington's World Cup debut came later than expected after he started both warm-up matches but was initially overlooked for Cam Burgess and Jason Geria. Coach Tony Popovic finally gave him the nod days before the Paraguay clash. "I was ready for all three games and I just wanted to be involved," Herrington said. His parents were informed, and his mother was nervous but excited. The match proved critical: a 1-0 defeat would have eliminated Australia, with Iran qualifying instead.
Fan zone video resurfaces
Herrington's journey gained extra attention when a video from 2022 emerged, showing a 14-year-old Herrington watching the Socceroos at a Brisbane fan zone. "I've been supporting the Socceroos at the World Cup for as long as I can remember, so to be here is special," he said. He hopes his story inspires others: "Just try and make everyone from where I'm back from just proud and give them someone to look at, [and show] that they can do it as well."
Souttar's praise and Rolls-Royce comparison
When told of Souttar's Rolls-Royce comparison, Herrington said, "No, I'm happy with Rolls-Royce. I'll take that." The young defender remains focused on the tournament, saying, "I'm just really trying to put my best forward and work hard, and we'll see what comes after it."
