Alex de Minaur's Wimbledon campaign came to a disappointing end on Monday as he fell to Flavio Cobolli 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 in the fourth round. The Australian ninth seed, who had been in strong form leading into the tournament, was unable to match the Italian's power and precision on Centre Court.
One-Sided Affair
De Minaur struggled from the outset, dropping serve three times in the first set. Cobolli, ranked 58th in the world, dictated play with his heavy groundstrokes and aggressive net approaches. The 23-year-old Italian broke de Minaur's serve five times in total and faced only two break points himself throughout the match.
According to tournament statistics, de Minaur won just 56% of his first-serve points, well below his season average of 68%. His usually reliable return game also faltered, as he failed to convert any of his three break opportunities.
Australian Hopes Dashed
De Minaur was the last remaining Australian in the men's singles draw after earlier exits by Nick Kyrgios and Jordan Thompson. His loss means no Australian man has reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon since Kyrgios in 2022.
"It's disappointing, obviously," de Minaur said after the match. "I didn't play my best tennis today. Flavio was too good, and I couldn't find a way to turn things around. I'll learn from this and come back stronger."
Cobolli's Breakthrough
For Cobolli, the victory represents a career milestone. It is his first Grand Slam quarterfinal appearance, and he becomes the first Italian man to reach the last eight at Wimbledon since Matteo Berrettini in 2021. He will next face world No. 1 Jannik Sinner, also Italian, in what promises to be a thrilling all-Italian clash.
Cobolli expressed his delight: "I'm very happy with my performance. I played aggressively and stayed focused. Alex is a great player, but I executed my game plan perfectly. Now I get to play Jannik, which will be a special moment for Italian tennis."
Match Statistics
The match lasted 1 hour and 48 minutes. Cobolli hit 34 winners to de Minaur's 18, and committed 22 unforced errors compared to de Minaur's 15. The Italian also won 70% of points on his first serve and 55% on his second, while de Minaur managed only 56% and 38%, respectively.
De Minaur's defeat follows a pattern of early exits for the Australian, who has now failed to reach the second week of a Grand Slam since the 2024 US Open. His best Wimbledon performance remains the quarterfinals in 2023.
Looking Ahead
De Minaur will now turn his attention to the hard-court season, with the US Open in August his next major target. Despite the loss, he remains optimistic: "I've been playing well this year, and one bad match doesn't define my season. I'll take a few days off, then get back to work."
Cobolli, meanwhile, will aim to continue his remarkable run when he faces Sinner on Wednesday. The quarterfinal match is scheduled to be the first on Centre Court.
