Takeshi Aruga was on his way home from a hospital visit in Okegawa, Japan, when he captured a striking photograph that demonstrates beauty can be found in the most ordinary settings. The furniture designer turned photographer was drawn to the colourful geometry of a multistorey car park at PAPA Ageo, a popular shopping centre.
The image, titled "Unframe the Everyday, 2026," was shot on a Google Pixel 8. Aruga noticed a blue signboard outside the car park that typically displays messages like "Thank you for visiting" and driving directions for drivers descending the ramp. Behind it, a red box—likely a fire extinguisher—added to the visual appeal.
Aruga, who works as a furniture designer and maker, credits his profession for his keen sense of geometric composition. "I also liked how the various colours created a striking contrast and balance," he said. He used Lightroom and Snapseed apps to apply minor edits to the photo.
Unable to create minimalist furniture, lighting, or three-dimensional sculptures recently due to various circumstances, Aruga has turned to photography as an alternative creative outlet. "Sometimes people ask me where the shot was taken, or how I came upon such a beautiful place. I'm keen to let them know that it was on an ordinary street corner," he explained.
He added, "We all tend to think we can't enjoy wonderful experiences or happiness unless we go to special places, but in reality, these things exist in the spaces we pass through every day."
