West Coast Eagles have fallen to the Melbourne Demons in their sixth consecutive loss, with the final score reflecting a hard-fought but ultimately unsuccessful effort at Marvel Stadium. The Eagles, who had shown promise earlier in the season with wins over North Melbourne and Port Adelaide, have now endured a run of poor form that includes heavy defeats to Sydney and St Kilda, as well as a loss to last-placed Richmond.
Despite the loss, West Coast displayed strong fight for parts of the contest and managed to keep the scoreline respectable. However, allowing the Demons to kick eight consecutive goals in the first half proved costly. Key performers for the Eagles included McCarthy and Murdock, while Waterman was strong throughout the day despite some inaccuracy in front of goal.
The Demons, coached by Steven King, have been a surprise packet this season, winning five of their first eight games despite losing stars Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver in the off-season. Max Gawn dominated the ruck contests against young Eagle Duff-Tytler, who showed some promising moments up forward.
West Coast now return to Perth to prepare for their next match against Greater Western Sydney. The team will also monitor Harry Edwards, who suffered another concussion during the game, with his wellbeing a focus in the coming fortnight.
