Sam Walker has been chosen to steer Queensland from halfback in the State of Origin opener, while Thomas Flegler makes an inspirational return from a shoulder nerve injury. Reece Walsh has been omitted from the squad.
The Maroons have retained 11 players from last year's series-deciding win, with six debutants named in the 20-man squad for the May 27 clash in Sydney. Walker, Max Plath, and Jojo Fifita will start, while Briton Nikora, Ezra Mam, and Kulikefu Finefeuiaki are on the bench.
Walsh's exclusion follows a dip in form, with Kalyn Ponga taking the fullback role. Walker has been compared to Allan Langer by Darren Lockyer for his unpredictability and brilliance, and the Maroons believe he is ready to shine after Tom Dearden's injury.
Flegler returns after 677 days out with a shoulder nerve issue, and his firebrand style is expected to be crucial. Jojo Fifita, switched from wing to centre, partners Selwyn Cobbo on the flank, while Plath's versatility earns him the starting lock position.
