Harley Reid in Frame for AFL State of Origin Return as Victoria Names Chief Selector

Melbourne legend Garry Lyon has been appointed chief selector of Victoria ahead of the AFL's State of Origin return in February next year. The match, the first serious State of Origin battle since 1999, will see Victoria travel to Perth to face Western Australia on February 14.

Lyon has indicated he wants to see emerging superstar Harley Reid in the Big V, despite Reid's 2025 form likely not placing him among the top Victorian players. Lyon emphasized the benefits Reid would gain from a four-day camp with the best players in the competition, calling it a great thing for Reid, the game, and its promotion.

Lyon recalled North Melbourne legend Brent Harvey's first State of Origin game at age 21 in 1999, where he kicked five goals and went on to a record-breaking career. Lyon hopes coach Chris Scott will be open to including rising talent, noting the selection process will be consultative.

Lyon described his own State of Origin experiences alongside legends like Gary Ablett Sr and Jason Dunstall as among the greatest thrills of his career. He wants current players like Caleb Serong, Noah Anderson, and Matt Rowell to have similar experiences.

Two-time premiership Eagle Glen Jakovich has been named Western Australia's selector, setting up a fierce interstate rivalry. The return of State of Origin after 25 years promises to reignite one of Australian football's most passionate rivalries.
