Fremantle have secured their sixth consecutive win, overcoming a determined Carlton side 14.10 (94) to 12.8 (80) in the Len Hall Tribute game at Optus Stadium. The Dockers, unchanged from their dominant western derby victory, faced a Blues team under pressure both on and off the field, with Ollie Hollands a late withdrawal to manage family concerns.
Despite being heavy favourites, Fremantle were tested by Carlton, who fought back strongly in the final quarter. The Blues kicked five of the last six goals to trim the margin to 14 points, but the Dockers held firm. Shai Bolton was instrumental, particularly in the opening minutes of the last quarter, effectively shutting Carlton out of the game. Bolton and Luke Jackson are likely candidates for the Anzac Day medal.
Ex-Docker Liam Reidy led the ruck for Carlton and performed well, but Fremantle's midfield depth proved decisive. “Our midfield is unreal, we’re spoilt for choice in there,” said a Docker player. “Bolton’s a pretty special player, we love having him here. He’s an extraordinary talent.”
Fremantle's defence also stood up under pressure, with one player noting, “I was down back trying to defend everything. But when he’s playing like that we’re going to be in every game.” The win highlighted the team's ability to grind out results, a sign of a top side. “There’s a lot of work to do but we’re getting better at it,” added another player.
Carlton will rue their slow start to the final term, but showed spirit to fight back. Patrick Cripps snapped a goal from close range to reduce the deficit, but time ran out. The Blues now face a tough road ahead as they seek to turn their season around.
