Former Hawthorn superstar Cyril Rioli is making a shock return to Victoria to play with local club Tongala. The surprise signing means the Hawks premiership hero will feature in his first local footy game in the state since retiring in 2018.
Tongala — in the Murray Football League — signed Rioli for their clash with Cobram on June 27. The club announced the news on social media, stating: "TFNC are thrilled to announce CYRIL RIOLI will be pulling on the blue jumper for a landmark game at Tongala on Saturday, 27 JUNE."
This marks only the second time Rioli has come back to Victoria since he stunned the football world and quit Hawthorn after a glittering career at the club. Last year, however, he reminded everyone of his prodigious talents when he lit up Marvel Stadium in the EJ Whitten Legends Game.
Tongala expressed their excitement: "We are beyond excited to have him join our boys at our home game against Cobram! Please join us for what is also our Men's Day. The Tin Shed will be in full swing, with sweepstakes, barbecue and of course, everyone's favourite Over 40s sprint race. Don't miss this amazing day out at TFNC!"
