New South Wales have pulled off one of the greatest comebacks in State of Origin history, overcoming a 20-0 deficit to defeat Queensland 22-20 in the series opener at Accor Stadium. Nathan Cleary and James Tedesco were the heroes, scoring crucial tries in the final minutes to secure victory in front of 79,186 fans.
Queensland dominated the first 20 minutes, scoring three converted tries through Robert Toia, Tom Flegler, and Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow. The Maroons led 20-0 after a penalty kick from Sam Walker, capitalizing on early errors from NSW winger Brian To'o.
The Blues fought back before halftime, with Cleary setting up a try for Hudson Young to make it 20-6. In the second half, Queensland's Kalyn Ponga was sent off for a shoulder charge, giving NSW momentum. Cleary scored a try with seven minutes left, and Tedesco crossed for the match-winner in the final minute.
Blues coach Laurie Daley praised his team's resilience, while Queensland coach Billy Slater lamented his side's inability to close out the game. The victory puts NSW 1-0 up in the three-match series as they aim to reclaim the Origin Shield.
