Young AFL Stars Shine in Canberra’s Chilly Conditions
Despite the biting cold that swept across Canberra over the weekend, young AFL players took to the field with unwavering enthusiasm. The junior matches, part of the AFL Canberra competition, saw children as young as six donning their jumpers and boots to play the sport they love. Parents and coaches huddled on the sidelines, wrapped in blankets and sipping hot drinks, cheering on their kids as they kicked, handballed, and tackled under grey skies.
A Tradition of Resilience
For many families, the weekend footy is a cherished ritual. “It doesn’t matter if it’s raining, hailing, or freezing – if there’s a game, we’re there,” said one parent, Sarah Thompson, whose son plays for the Belconnen Magpies. “The kids don’t feel the cold once they start running. They just love being out there with their mates.” The matches, held at various grounds across the capital, are a testament to the community’s dedication to grassroots sport.
Community Spirit on Display
The cold weather didn’t dampen the spirits of the players or the supporters. Many teams set up makeshift shelters and offered warm soup and sausage sizzles to keep everyone going. “It’s about more than just footy,” said coach Mark Davis of the Ainslie Kangaroos. “It’s about building character and resilience. These kids learn that you show up and give your best, no matter what the conditions.” The AFL Canberra season runs through autumn and winter, and despite the chill, participation numbers remain strong.
Health and Safety Precautions
Organisers emphasised that player safety is a priority. “We monitor the weather closely and have guidelines for extreme conditions,” said AFL Canberra’s development officer, Lisa Chen. “Parents are advised to dress their children in layers, and we make sure there are plenty of breaks for warm-ups and hot drinks. The kids are tough, but we keep a close eye on them.” So far, no games have been cancelled due to cold, reflecting the resilience of the young athletes.
As the winter season progresses, the AFL Canberra community continues to show that the spirit of the game thrives, even in the coldest weather. The dedication of these young players and their families ensures that footy remains a vibrant part of Canberra’s sporting landscape.
