The move comes as part of a broader push to enhance opportunities for female footballers in the region.
Petition Gains Momentum
The petition, which has garnered significant support from the local soccer community, calls on Capital Football to introduce a dedicated NPL pathway for girls. Steel, who also serves as a member of the ACT Legislative Assembly, said the initiative is crucial for the development of women's football.
"We need to provide our young female players with the same opportunities as their male counterparts," Steel said. "An NPL girls' competition would not only improve skill levels but also inspire more girls to take up the sport."

The petition has been backed by numerous clubs, parents, and players across the ACT. Supporters argue that a structured competition would help retain talented players who currently have limited options after junior levels.
"Many girls are forced to travel interstate or play in boys' teams due to the lack of a local NPL competition," said petition organizer Sarah Thompson. "This petition aims to change that."
