Newcastle United are on the verge of completing a £23 million deal for Ajax's 18-year-old midfield prodigy Sean Steur. The highly-rated two-footed central midfielder has drawn comparisons to former Ajax star Frenkie de Jong and is expected to bolster Eddie Howe's rebuilding squad following the departures of Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon.
Steur's Rapid Rise at Ajax
Steur began last season in Ajax's youth ranks before breaking into the first team, amassing 25 senior appearances. His performances quickly earned him recognition as one of the Eredivisie's brightest young talents and a call-up to the Netherlands Under-19s national team. Capable of playing as a No. 6 or No. 8, Steur is seen as a generational talent capable of filling the void left by Tonali's move to Tottenham.
Newcastle's Summer Rebuild
With Tonali's transfer to Tottenham potentially reaching £100 million, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is reshaping his midfield. Steur is likely to compete with Lewis Miley for the central midfield role, with the club planning to give him time to adapt to the Premier League's physical demands. Despite Steur's impending arrival, Newcastle continue to pursue Freiburg's Switzerland midfielder Johan Manzambi, valued at around £51 million, and have already signed winger Bazoumana Touré from Hoffenheim for £43 million to replace Gordon, who joined Barcelona in May.
Comparisons to Frenkie de Jong
Steur has been widely hyped as Ajax's next great midfield export since De Jong left for Barcelona in 2019. His versatility and technical ability make him a valuable asset for Newcastle as they look to build a competitive squad for the upcoming season.
