Julian Nagelsmann has confirmed he will remain as head coach of the German national team beyond Euro 2024, putting an end to speculation that Jürgen Klopp might succeed him. The announcement comes as Germany prepares to host the European Championship this summer, with Nagelsmann committing to lead the team through the 2026 World Cup cycle.
Nagelsmann's Commitment to Germany
Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Nagelsmann stated unequivocally that he intends to stay in charge after the tournament. “I have a contract until 2026, and I plan to fulfill it. There is no clause that would allow me to leave early, and I have no intention of doing so,” Nagelsmann said. The 36-year-old took over from Hansi Flick in September 2023 and has since overseen a revival in the team's form, including a 2-0 win over France in March.
The German Football Association (DFB) has publicly backed Nagelsmann, with sporting director Rudi Völler emphasizing that the coach is the right man for the long-term project. “Julian has our full confidence. The team is developing well under his guidance, and we are looking forward to the future with him,” Völler said.
Klopp Speculation Dismissed
Rumors had circulated that Jürgen Klopp, who will leave Liverpool at the end of the season, could be a candidate to replace Nagelsmann after Euro 2024. However, both Nagelsmann and DFB officials have dismissed such talk. “Jürgen is a great coach, but he is not an option for us now. Julian is our coach, and we are happy with him,” Völler added.
Klopp himself has not commented on the speculation, but sources close to the former Borussia Dortmund manager indicate he is taking a sabbatical after nine years at Liverpool and is not seeking an immediate return to management.
Germany's Euro 2024 Preparations
Germany will open Euro 2024 against Scotland on June 14 in Munich. Nagelsmann has named a 26-man squad that includes veterans like Manuel Neuer and Thomas Müller, as well as young talents such as Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz. The team has won three of its last four friendlies, including a 2-1 victory over the Netherlands.
“We are confident going into the tournament. The squad has a good mix of experience and youth, and we are playing at home, which gives us an extra boost,” Nagelsmann said. Germany is in Group A alongside Scotland, Hungary, and Switzerland.
Impact on Future Plans
Nagelsmann's extension removes uncertainty for the DFB as it plans for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Germany failed to advance past the group stage in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, and the federation is keen to restore the team's reputation. “We have a clear vision for the next four years. Julian is central to that vision,” Völler said.
The confirmation also ends any distraction for the players during Euro 2024. Captain İlkay Gündoğan welcomed the clarity. “It's good to know that the coach will be with us for the long term. It gives stability to the team,” Gündoğan said.
