Kevin Keegan, the former England and Newcastle manager, has revealed he is battling stage four cancer. The 75-year-old, who also enjoyed a stellar playing career with Liverpool and Hamburg, provided an update on his health during a weekend appearance at the Tyne Theatre and Opera House.
Keegan stated that he has a top doctor working on his case, who happens to be a Liverpool supporter. He quipped, "I knew I wouldn't be walking alone," referencing the famous Liverpool anthem. His family had previously announced in January that he had been diagnosed with cancer.
Newcastle United sends heartfelt support
Newcastle United, where Keegan spent two years as a player and later managed in two separate spells, expressed their support in a post on X. The club said, "We send our heartfelt support and warmest wishes to Kevin Keegan and his family following his recent diagnosis of stage four cancer. Kevin holds a unique and cherished place in the history of Newcastle, and in the hearts of our supporters. His passion, leadership and connection to the club and city have shaped some of our most memorable moments. Everyone at the club is behind Kevin and sends strength and best wishes to him and his family for the journey ahead. Kevin will always be warmly welcomed at St James' Park and we hope to see him again soon."
Keegan's illustrious career
Keegan began his playing career at Scunthorpe before joining Liverpool in 1971. At Liverpool, he won the First Division three times, the Uefa Cup twice, the FA Cup, and the European Cup in 1977. He was awarded the Ballon d'Or twice while playing for Hamburg, where he also reached another European Cup final. He later played for Southampton and Newcastle before retiring in 1984. Internationally, he scored 21 goals in 63 appearances for England and played at the 1982 World Cup.
As a manager, Keegan took charge of Newcastle in 1992, leading them to promotion to the Premier League and narrowly missing out on the 1995-96 title to Manchester United. He later managed Fulham, the England national team, Manchester City, and returned to Newcastle for a brief spell in 2008.
During the event, Keegan expressed a desire to return to St James' Park to say goodbye, stating, "I want to say goodbye. I didn't get the chance when I left the club last time."
