Everton and Chelsea are both pursuing Middlesbrough's rising stars Tyrique George and Hayden Hackney, with a combined transfer fee of around £40 million being discussed, according to sources close to the negotiations. The two Premier League clubs have been monitoring the duo's progress throughout the Championship season, and initial talks have taken place with Middlesbrough officials.
Double Swoop on the Cards
The potential double deal would see George, a 21-year-old winger, and Hackney, a 22-year-old central midfielder, make the move to the top flight. Both players have been instrumental in Middlesbrough's push for a playoff spot, with George contributing 8 goals and 6 assists this season, while Hackney has chipped in with 4 goals and 3 assists from midfield.
Everton manager Sean Dyche is believed to be particularly keen on Hackney, viewing him as a long-term replacement for the aging Idrissa Gueye. Chelsea, under new head coach Mauricio Pochettino, see George as a versatile attacking option who can play on either flank.
Middlesbrough's Stance
Middlesbrough are reluctant to lose two key players in the same window, but the financial package on offer may prove too good to turn down. A club insider said: "We are aware of interest from Everton and Chelsea in both players. No formal bids have been made yet, but we expect that to change in the coming weeks. Our priority is to retain our best talent, but we also have to be realistic about the club's financial position."
The Teesside club is reportedly holding out for a combined fee of £45 million, but sources indicate that a deal closer to £40 million plus add-ons is more likely.
Player Profiles
Tyrique George, a product of Middlesbrough's academy, has made 78 first-team appearances, scoring 15 goals and providing 12 assists. His pace and dribbling ability have drawn comparisons to former Middlesbrough winger Adama Traore.
Hayden Hackney, who joined Middlesbrough from Scottish side Ross County in 2021, has developed into a composed midfield presence, known for his passing range and work rate. He has made 85 appearances for the club, with 9 goals and 8 assists.
Competition from Other Clubs
Both players are also attracting interest from other Premier League sides, including West Ham and Aston Villa, but Everton and Chelsea are considered the frontrunners. The transfer window opens on July 1, and negotiations are expected to intensify in the coming days.
If the deals go through, it would represent a significant statement of intent from both Everton, who are looking to build on a mid-table finish, and Chelsea, who are aiming to return to the Champions League places under Pochettino.
