Ecuador coach Sebastian Beccacece has stepped down from his role following his team's 2-0 defeat to World Cup co-hosts Mexico in the round of 32 on Tuesday evening (Wednesday AEST). The 45-year-old Argentinian announced his resignation after the match, citing the results as the deciding factor.
Beccacece's Farewell Statement
“The results are what count, and today I have to say goodbye to a lovely, wonderful family,” Beccacece said after the loss. He expressed “great gratitude, great composure and inner peace, because we gave it our all.” The coach, who took over the position in August 2024, reflected on the team's journey: “It was all about achieving the goal we’d set ourselves. Well, that’s football for you. I think we’re leaving a legacy behind. It’s been a wonderful adventure with a bittersweet ending.” He added, “I’m going to spend some time with my family for now, have a rest and reflect on what I could have done better.”
Match Performance and Exit
Ecuador were clearly outplayed by Mexico, particularly in the first half, falling 2-0 behind after just over 30 minutes. The defeat ended Ecuador's World Cup campaign, which had seen them qualify for the knockout stage by defeating Germany 2-1 in their final group match. The Ecuador players and coach were seen leaving the field after the loss, marking the end of Beccacece's tenure.
