Wayde Peterson has been named the new chief executive officer of Shellharbour City Council, after serving in the role on an acting basis for 10 months. The appointment was confirmed during an extraordinary council meeting on Tuesday, following a confidential session where the recruitment panel addressed councillors.
Peterson stepped into the acting CEO position in February after former CEO Mike Archer resigned. Prior to that, he held the role of Executive Director Business Enterprises at the council. Peterson began his career at Shellharbour City Council as an engineering cadet in 2000, and after pursuing other opportunities, returned for a second stint in 2018.
Mayor Chris Homer praised Peterson's leadership and vision, stating, 'This is a pivotal time for Shellharbour City Council. Wayde's leadership skills, strategic vision and genuine commitment to community will be invaluable in helping shape that future.'
Peterson, who was born and raised in the Illawarra, expressed his honour at being appointed. 'Council plays an important role in delivering high-quality infrastructure and services that help improve the quality of life of our community,' he said. 'I am excited to partner with the Mayor, councillors, our excellent staff and the community to deliver on the vision of a sustainable and thriving city.'
He emphasized collaboration as central to his leadership approach, adding, 'Collaboration with staff, local communities, partners and government will remain central to how I lead and the outcomes we achieve together.'
